How to help people with disabilities online

Research shows that a large group of Dutch people have a moderate or severe form of disability. This can be a physical disability or a mental disability. In total, some 2.3 million Dutch people have some form of disability.
These people are also looking for a day out or a stay in another city or region. By offering them accessibility information, it is also possible for them to search and plan a day out.
Who is looking for an accessible location
The target group consists mainly of elderly people, families with limited children, or people who have become disabled later in life due to an accident
The target group mainly travels with a partner and/or spouse or in groups. The accessible information must therefore be suitable for both the person with a disability and any accompanying person. Information should therefore be given in clear language and clear descriptions.
What is needed most

Most of the need is to see if a location is suitable to visit with a disability. The focus is on the following components:
- Suitable for wheelchair/scooter
- Can a service dog come in
- Suitable for stick, crutch or rollator
- Is there a (brace) toilet
- Is there a (stair)lift
We therefore distinguish between the following limitations. This terminology is clear, straightforward and recognisable to everyone:
![]()
- Blind/ partially sighted
- Wheelchair/disabled
- Deaf/hearing impaired
- Assistant dog
For example, we show whether a location is accessible:

We use clear icons to show to what extent a location is accessible for a certain type of disability. By clicking on the icon, detailed information can be viewed. A number of frequently used accessibility features are already present in Base. These can be expanded as required.

Example of detailed accessibility information
If more information is required (e.g. more information on the width of passages and/or toilets), detailed information can be viewed in the extended accessibility information popup. This information can optionally be labelled by an official accessibility inspector.
Help us make the web more accessible and usable and offer people with disabilities a chance to have a great day out!
