The challenge

Heritage is, by its very nature, somewhat intangible. The stories are there, the locations are there, the history is there. But how do you convey that richness to people who have never heard of it? And how do you turn a visit into an experience that lingers in the memory?

Interest in heritage is growing. People are more curious than ever about the history of the places around them. This presents a huge opportunity, because heritage holds stories that films and books cannot invent. Stories about water as a weapon, about people who built for eternity, about choices that changed the landscape forever.

Many heritage sites possess wonderful material: archive images, maps, stories from experts, and routes through the countryside. The challenge is to make this material accessible in a way that inspires and entices both a wide audience who are not yet familiar with the site and the loyal visitor who always wants to know more.

The solution

With Living Heritage, you can bring together the stories of your location in one place. An interactive timeline gives visitors a sense of the history, whilst audio tours bring that history to life. Showcase, Media Grid and Image Reveal ensure that the story is as visually compelling as the location itself. The interactive map makes the landscape accessible to explore, even for those who have never been there before.

For schools, the press, volunteers and partners, up-to-date and approved material is always available via the media library: from atmospheric images to teaching packs and historical documents.

Whether you’re a heritage organisation building a digital platform for the first time, or a DMO looking to integrate heritage more firmly into your offering, the package suits both. Existing Plaece websites are enhanced with whatever is missing. Those who do not yet have a platform can start with a foundation that tells a compelling story right from the start.

What we bring to the table is more than just technology. Insiders has been working for over three hundred destinations in the Netherlands and beyond for many years . We know how to craft a story that resonates with people, which combination of images, maps and text works best, and how to build a platform that will still be relevant in five years’ time. We apply this expertise to heritage. Not with a one-size-fits-all solution, but with an approach tailored to your location, your story and your audience.

Case study: Dutch Waterlines

The Dutch Waterlines stretch across 200 kilometres of the Dutch landscape, from Muiden to the Biesbosch. Following UNESCO recognition in 2021, there was a need for a single digital home for all the stories that had previously been scattered across various platforms. Insiders built an inspiration platform that brings together the rich military history of the lines: from an interactive timeline to routes past forts, locks and dykes. Residents and visitors now have a place where the stories of the lines are brought together in one place for the first time
